What is a doula?

As far back as history is recounted, women attended women in childbirth. They provided a ministry of education to young women about their bodies, having children and healthy pregnancies. Childbearing women relied on their close-knit community of women to assist them in labour, birth and early care of their children. Today we call this childbirth professional a doula.

We are...

  • advocates
  • labour coaches
  • support partners for moms and their partners
  • great listeners
  • the partner's back pocket step-by-step guide book

We...

  • believe in the process of birth and the impact it has on parenting
  • trust a women's instincts
  • acknowledge the power of birth
  • recognize birth is a non-medical event unless a woman asks for assistance for her or her baby
  • understand that the fewer people interrupting the birth process, the quicker the birth
  • do not impose our own thoughts and beliefs
  • know that the birthing woman's partner is the most important team member, if that is right for the couple

Virtual Birth Doula Support

Given all that has happened with COVID-19, and with the expanding borders of The WOMB village (we have gone international!) some women, couples and families have chosen to continue to have the guidance and support of a woman experienced and knowledgeable in birth and comfort measures to be with them through their birth experience VIRTUALLY. This would be a great option for:

  • families living outside the physical catchment area of The WOMB village
  • families whose chosen birth hospital is not yet re-opened to physical doula support
  • families who have not expanded their circle of care beyond their immediate family

Virtual support includes:

  • the traditional prenatal and postnatal meetings all done virtually (as above)
  • a tailored approach to support
  • summarized emails regarding the discussions had in the meetings
  • cheat sheet handouts and links to research and resources
  • phone, email and text support
  • virtual platform support (may be through FaceTime, Zoom or another platform as arranged)
